"Beauty is simplicity with a dash of daring."
-- Bernard K. Passman
When most people look at a piece of black coral, all they see is something that resembles a broken tree branch or a discarded remnant of driftwood. When Bernard K. Passman looked at a piece of black cora, he saw a sleek panther ready to spring, a rearing stallion with hoofs pawing the air, a graceful ballerina, a bulldozing football lineman or anything else his fertile imagination could conjure up.
What Pablo Picasso is to painting, Bernard K. Passman is to black coral sculpture.
From the depths of the Western Caribbean, divers retrieve the finest of gem-quality coral after it has naturally broken off from a living reef. From this coral, Passman has sculpted objects so delicate and intricate that he has been avidly sought by collectors for private commissions.
Passman's work is displayed at his galleries located in New Orleans, t. Thomas, Maui, Las Vegas, Grand Cayman Island, Ketchickan and Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles.
His galleries offer Passman's unique designs in black coral, complemented with diamonds, gold and platinum - both in the form of original jewelry and unique objects d'art.
One of the most unique examples of his work is the 97-piece black coral and sterling silver tableware service that he was commissioned to do as a wedding gift for Prince Charles and Princess Diana and the 11-piece miniature of the same set that he created for Prince William upon the occasion of his birth. Both sets received worldwide attention, but for Passman, every piece he creates is fit for a king - or a future king. "I like to think that each of my pieces represent a different aspect of life's beauty," he says.
